Address by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, at the ceremony for receiving the credentials of the new Ambassador of Georgia, Mr Konstantine Kvachakidze

Your Excellency,

I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to you on the occasion of the presentation of your credentials as the new Ambassador of Georgia to the Republic of Cyprus. May I also assure you of my Government's determination to further strengthen and deepen our bilateral relations in all areas of cooperation to the mutual benefit of our countries and people.

The strong bonds between Cyprus and George, considerably enhanced by the Georgian community in Cyprus, serve as a solid foundation for our bilateral relationship. I would like to reiterate that my Government is committed to constructively advancing the existing ties of cooperation even further for the mutual prosperity of both our peoples. Cyprus is particularly focused on broadening the scope of our cooperation by enhancing and intensifying the bilateral institutional framework between Cyprus and Georgia. I strongly believe that it will enable us to explore new avenues of collaboration in areas such as education, culture, business, and investment.

Moreover, Cyprus and Georgia maintain a good level of cooperation in international organizations. Let me assure you that we highly wish that this cooperation will be soon further developed and expanded.

The relations between Georgia and Cyprus are guided by our common adherence to international law and to the principles of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states. Cyprus still suffers the consequences of the 1974 illegal Turkish invasion and the continuing military occupation of more than one third of its territory.

I express my sincere appreciation for the principled stance of Georgia regarding the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. We highly value your support in our efforts to resume negotiations from where they were left off at Crans Montana. I wish to reiterate once again our commitment to a solution on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, as prescribed in the respective UNSC Resolutions. A solution on the above basis is vitally important for Cyprus and all Cypriots, for all involved in the Cyprus problem as well as for all international actors with vital interests for the security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, including the EU.

Your Excellency,

Let me reiterate that Cyprus unequivocally supports Georgia’s European integration. I am convinced that the European Council decision of December 2023 to grant Georgia candidate status was indeed a historic step.

I assure you, once again, that my Government will be supporting you in the execution of your high duties. Please convey to Her Excellency, President Zourabichvili, and to His Excellency, Prime Minister Kobakhidze my heartfelt greetings and my most sincere wishes for a lasting friendship between Cyprus and Georgia.

Ambassador Kvachakidze, I warmly welcome you to Cyprus.
