Remarks by the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Makis Keravnos, on the event for the National Day of the State of Kuwait

It is an honour to join you this evening for this double celebration of the 64th National Day and the 34th Liberation Day of the State of Kuwait. On behalf of the Government and the people of Cyprus, I extend our warmest congratulations and sincerest best wishes.

Since gaining independence in 1961, Kuwait has been a beacon of stability and diplomacy in the region. It has consistently played a vital role in promoting peace, fostering dialogue, and supporting humanitarian efforts. Kuwait’s long-standing tradition of mediation and commitment to regional security is widely acknowledged and deeply valued by the international community.

On this special occasion, we recognise Kuwait’s support for addressing the issue of missing persons worldwide. We appreciate Kuwait’s past assistance to the Cyprus Committee on Missing Persons and its efforts in establishing similar mechanisms elsewhere. We remain open to sharing best practices in this important field.

We also value Kuwait’s recognition of the University of Cyprus, which will strengthen educational ties between our nations. We look forward to further collaboration in the field of higher education.

Furthermore, we are eager to explore new opportunities to enhance our economic partnership and bilateral investments, building on our strong and enduring political relations.

Additionally, we are committed to deepening European Union (EU)-Kuwait relations. As Cyprus prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first semester of 2026, strengthening the EU-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) partnership will be a key priority. We will utilise the EU framework to foster new opportunities, particularly in investment and sustainable development.

We are witnessing major changes in our region. The ceasefire in Lebanon. The ceasefire in Gaza – which was facilitated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States. These are crucial steps toward peace and stability. We recognise the humanitarian needs on the ground and support efforts to alleviate suffering and promoting dialogue.

In this regard, we value our collaboration under the Amalthea Initiative, working alongside a distinguished Kuwaiti non-governmental organisation (NGO) to facilitate humanitarian assistance. It is our hope that these efforts, along with the ceasefire, will help pave the way for lasting peace and security in the region.

Dear Ambassador,

We celebrate Kuwait's achievements today and look forward to further strengthening our strategic partnership in the years ahead. Together, we can build a more peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future.

Thank you, and once again, congratulations to the State of Kuwait and its people on this auspicious occasion.
