It is with pleasure that the House of Representatives has welcomed you at its premises and has hosted the deliberations of the 3^rd session of the Mediterranean Model European Parliament.

The Model European Parliament serves as the forum for youth democracy and parliamentarism. Its mission is three-fold; it aims at raising awareness on the meaning of peace and European identity, at spreading knowledge about different political and cultural backgrounds and about the foundational values of diversity, pluralism, active tolerance and respect, as well as at strengthening EU key competences for lifelong learning and skills.

Today you have actively contributed in all three facets of this mission with the utmost degree of enthusiasm and responsibility. I am particularly content to see such energetic, vibrant and well-rounded young politicians and future decision-makers committed to the ideals of Europe and the European Union, representing the youth of today.

Your discussions on this year’s agenda topics of the Mediterranean Model European Parliament have been very fruitful and relevant not only to the Mediterranean region, but to the entire EU. Blue Growth and Economy, the Qualified Workforce Migration, the EU’s Energy Autonomy, the Migrant Crisis and Euroscepticism are some of the main challenges provoking controversies and threatening the foundations of the Union. As such, they call for innovative ideas, holistic solutions, common action and solidarity. In this context, I am pleased that these issues have been discussed in Cyprus, a small EU member state facing challenges in all the aforementioned fields and stressing the need for solidarity.

I would like to thank you for your active participation in today’s deliberations, for your engagement in stimulating interest in such high-level international issues and for setting an example for your peers to follow in today’s Europe, where strengthening the sense of belonging to the EU is more relevant than ever. I would also like to thank the organizers of this event for their effort and efficiency in ensuring the smooth carrying out of the session.

I hope you had an enjoyable session at the premises of the House of Representatives of Cyprus.

I wish you the best in the valuable work you will be undertaking in your future sessions, as well as in your future professional and personal endeavors.
