Award for the Amalthea Plan from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), in the framework of this year's annual awards to personalities and organisations whose actions contribute substantially to the achievement of the objectives of the Assembly, awarded the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Constantinos Kombos, in recognition of the initiative of Cyprus to create a maritime corridor for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, through the implementation of the Amalthea Plan.

The award ceremony took place yesterday, Wednesday, 15 May 2024, in Braga, Portugal, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the PAM, Parliament Speakers of Mediterranean countries who participate in the PAM, as well as other distinguished guests.

The award was received on behalf of the Foreign Affairs Minister by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Lisbon, Mr Elpidoforos Economou. In his greeting, on behalf of Mr Kombos, Mr Economou conveyed the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ and the Government of Cyprus’ gratitude for this recognition, stressing that the maritime humanitarian corridor is a joint effort of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the competent authorities, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also noted that its sole objective is to make a substantial contribution to the efforts of the international community to deliver humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza.

Concluding, the Ambassador conveyed the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ assurance that Cyprus will continue to work hard and utilise all its means to accomplish this difficult task, acting as a safe port in the region in times of crisis.
